Lamont Jody Hawkins, better known as U-God, is an American rapper and member of the hip hop collective, Wu-Tang Clan (Over 12 million records sold worldwide). He has been with the group since its inception, and has been known for coming with strong verses on clan albums as well as other members solo albums. U-God was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York. However he moved to Staten Island as a youth. He was originally a beatboxer for fellow clan member Cappadonna, as well as being well known friends with future members Method Man, Inspectah Deck, and Raekwon. Sometime before the members united, U-God was mentored in rap by Cappadonna. He soon became friends with RZA and Ghostface, and he began rhyming under the alias Golden Arms, based on the Kung-Fu movie The Kid with The Golden Arms. Later on narcotics possession prevented him from featuring heavily on the group’s debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), his input on the seminal LP consisting of only a short bridge on the group’s debut single “Protect Ya Neck” as well as the now famous opening verse of “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’”. Nevertheless, after his release he quickly became known to fans for his rugged flow and bass-like voice on Wu tracks such as “Winter Warz”, “Knuckleheadz”, “Investigative Reports”, and “Black Jesus”. He was featured heavily on the group’s second album Wu-Tang Forever on which he was one of only three of the group to get a solo track – “Black Shampoo” (While the others being Inspectah Deck with “The City”, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard with “Dog Shit”). Around this time his young son was accidentally shot and injured, an ordeal the rapper documented on the Wu-Tang Clan track A Better Tomorrow. He appeared with all the clan members during the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors, as well as on tour for the release of Wu Tang Clan’s latest album, 8 Diagrams. U-God is currently working on an album titled Dopium:Bring Back God, set to be released sometime in early 2009 and touring around the globe in support of 8 Diagrams.

Multi talented, highly respected Toronto emcee Theology 3 a.k.a. Theo3 is on a fast incline towards International success and notoriety. Building an undeniable catalogue of solo releases and Worldwide collaborations (Audio Research records, Kenn Starr, Shad K, D.L. Incognito) from 2003 onwards, critics across the Globe have continually heralded his innovative concepts and deadly rhyme flows. From AllHipHop.com to HipHopConnection U.K., Pound magazine to NOW magazine, there is no shortage of appreciation for one of Canada’s lyrical heavyweights. With his Brand New “FEATURING…NO Features” E.P. due out in September of 2009, Theo3 has pulled together the cream of Canadian production talent including Tone Mason (Fantasia ‘Hood Boy’, Sean Price ‘Boom Aye Yeah’) and Dj Alibi (Tres Records, J Live).

The lush soundscapes provide the timeless backdrop for Theo3′s non – compartmentalized, limitless lyrical stylings. The lead buzz single MAKE IT BIG has already gained extensive International Airplay while earning prominent blog placements on the highly trafficked 2dopeboyz.com, kevinnottingham.com and The real frequency respectively. Worldwide Dj’s ranging from NYC’s Fat Beats representative Dj Eclipse to London England’s influential Dj Kingstun all the way to Lords of the Underground legend Dj Lord Jazz in Paris, France and L.A.’s seminal college D.J. Michael Nardone have each become staunch supporters of Theo3′s unique and head noddin’ compositions.

Theo3, The Screwface Capital® Rep, has always brought out the most ravenous Hip Hop fans to his live shows. Venues such as downtown Toronto’s biggest open air stage Dundas Square (NXNE 2008 Top 60 Tip Sheet honour), the legendary Opera House (Masta Ace), Tonic Nightclub (Lupe Fiasco), Rogers Centre the home of the Blue Jays and Montreal’s Foufunes Electriques have all been energized by his lively and rapid fire performances. Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, London, Barrie, Hamilton, Stratford, Buffalo and many more cities have been rocked to the foundations whether opening or headlining. The versatile, crowd rocking emcee is also able to assume hosting duties for any jam. As Main Stage host for the 5,000 person capacity Harbourfront concert series in Toronto over the past 2 years, Theo3 has introduced the likes of Lee Scratch Perry, Seun Kuti, Crystal Castles, Lord Finesse and Dj Grand Wizard Theodore to name a few.

In December 2008, co-publishers Rob, James and Karch launched “Nerd Up” with the goal of bringing our own brand of geek news to the “internets” and to create a haven where our fellow geeks could voice their own opinion.

The purpose of this is site is to write about what we love! We all still collect comics, movies, games and collectibles. We’re able to write from the perspective of the average unbiased fan, because we ARE those fans.

The term “Nerd Up” originally started out as a reoccurring joke. Often when referring to something geeky, we would end our sentences with an affectionate “Nerd Up”. It’s stuck around this long, so when coming up with a name for the site, Nerd Up fit perfectly!

Anonymous Twist, a.k.a Owen Chaim, is a hip hop veteran. Those that grew up in Toronto’s golden age of hip hop in the late 80s early 90s will remember this Scarborough native’s alias as turntablist DJ Apollo. Cutting, scratching and kicking routines on the DJ battle scene, he took second place at his first citywide competition and had one of his routines featured on Much Music’s, Rap City. Around the same time, Owen began making his own beats and writing rhymes. He soon left the battle DJ moniker behind and resurfaced as the triple threat DJ/MC/producer Anonymous Twist. His ability simultaneously flex his DJ and Mic skills has gained him mad respect at his live shows.

With two indie albums under his belt and world wide DJ chart attention for his debut single “Royal Flush”, Anonymous Twist is back with a top notch single on Toronto’s premiere “to the left” tastemaking label, Do Right! Music. The haunting headnodder “Sweet Sixteen” featuring well-known Bay Area MC, Planet Asia (Cali Agents, Stones Throw) and the catchy and bouncy B-side “Respect That” are essential to any hip hop enthusiast”s collection.

At a time when rap is more about the flash and less about the rhyme, it”s refreshing to hear insightful yet hard-hitting slices of hip hop. Anonymous Twist delivers the straight goods using his technical and creative merit rather than relying on shock value. Twist is the master multi-tasker: he’s behind the board, on the cut and spitting on the mic. “Sweet Sixteen” is a stormer of a tune with an interesting concept. The title refers to the standard number of bars a verse will stretch for in a hip hop song. It is typically how a rapper is measured, what they do in those 16 bars. If this is the case then both Asia and Twist’s verses should be off the scale! This stone cold killer with it’s heavy and dirty bassline, and an eerie Theremin inspired melody serve as a tasty background for Planet Asia to drop his ill 16 bar verse about life, death and spirituality. Twist comes in without missing a beat, keeping the necksnapping vibe going and complementing Asia perfectly, ensuring this track’s status as a rewind certainty.

“Respect That” is the chunky beat driven monster of a B-side with A.T. kicking lyrics in his clear baritone voice and smooth yet well-enunciated and distinctive flow. He spits about different facets of hip hop and building respect and likens the artform to literally developing a structure brick by brick.

Anonymous Twist is currently working on his second album which will include collabos with top-notch artists like Sean Price (Heltah Skeltah, Boot Camp Click), Oh No (Stones Throw) and more. If “Respect That” and “Sweet Sixteen” are any indication of the dopeness to come, then expect big tidal waves from this artist who has a true understanding of hip hop culture: the roots of the artform, and a vision for taking it into the future.
